Killer confesses, gets out


ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — The day after admitting he killed a woman and dumped her body on a rural road, a St. Catharines, Ont., man was released from jail.

Judge Stephen Glithero sentenced Wayne Ryczak, 55, to one day in jail on Thursday for the death of 29-year-old Stephine Beck.

‘Scary’ weapons seized

21-year-old charged with trafficking machine-guns, assault rifles, Uzis


Police and customs officers seized machine-guns and assault rifles from at least two Halifax addresses Wednesday.

The weapons, including Uzi and MAC-10 submachine-guns and AR-15 assault rifles, were allegedly smuggled into Canada from the United States since March 2006, court records show.

Fishermen continue blockade Inverness Harbour



INVERNESS — A harbour blockade remained in place in the tiny fishing community of Inverness, N.S., Friday as angry fishermen continued to demand a share of the local crab quota.

At least three Cape Island boats were blocking the 30-metre-wide channel to the wharf keeping four New Brunswick vessel from leaving to set traps in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Valley thieves dig up 1.6 km of water pipe

Heist worth $24,000 at scrapyard


CORNWALLIS — Thieves used excavators to dig up and steal more than 100 tonnes of water pipe from alongside an abandoned railway bed that runs from this small Annapolis County community to Moose River.

The brazen thieves dug up 1.6 kilometres of pipe that once served as a waterline for the former CFB Cornwallis.
