HRM and Wellness
The health and wellness team is moving forward with some events to promote a healthier Halifax by highlighting sports and pastimes that may not get the attention they deserve for health promotion. After running a successful "Fusion Fitness Foursome" in May, the team has moved on to a an Outdoor Yoga Night with the Yoga Loft at Needham Park on July 8 from 6:15-7:15. The goals are twofold: promote e . ... more

"Gens X and Y? Just show them the money"
I read an interesting survey in the Globe and Mail today (see below) about the disconnect between employers and the next generation of employees. Opportunities to advance, performance based bonuses, higher salaries and seeking new challenges top the list for those surveyed. This really isn't that surprising to me as we have a fundamental cultural/generational shift. Younger people also face higher . ... more

What would you do with our tax dollars to green our city?
The mission of Fusion's Sustainability Action Team is to encourage everyone to live, work and play in environmentally sustainable ways. Our members agree that our city can benefit by making sustainable choices as convenient, practical and even as fun as possible. Let's face it – although it would be ideal, most of us are not going to sell our cars anytime soon– but the majority of us can take step . ... more

How do we become one of the world's most livable cities?
Increasingly people are looking at what it takes to be a "destination of choice". It happens to be one of my fascinations lately. Over the past year I have seen several surveys and lists defining top cities in the world. In my mind, our community and the whole region for that matter has got to start to look at these models, economic strategies and categories that define the "winners". Obviously Ha . ... more

A deeper diversity
When we hear the term diversity, the first thing that usually comes to mind is ethnic diversity. And that’s really important, and we certainly need more ethnic diversity in Halifax. Our future population growth depends on immigration, and more ethnically diverse cities are (in my mind, anyway) more fun and interesting cities in which to live. But ethnicity is only one kind of diversity. And frankl . ... more

The 'network' .. a blessing or a curse?
I received a very troubling email about a week ago. It was from someone who has recently returned to Halifax and is now looking for a job. He left this city after his education, pursuing what turned into a very successful 17-year career with a leading global company. He is highly-educated, and brings a wealth of international business experience with him. In short, he is exactly the kind of person . ... more

Vibrant?
There has been a lot of recent discussion in our community about vibrancy. HRM by Design has as one of its core principles the fostering of a vibrant urban core. Many young professionals also talk about a vibrant city being important to them, which is critically important now, when Greater Halifax needs to hold on to as many of this demographic as possible. But what is ‘vibrancy’, really, and how . ... more
