Minister promises full review



Transportation Minister Murray Scott promised Thursday an independent review of safety on the Cobequid Pass after hundreds of people were stuck overnight on the toll highway.

Mr. Scott also committed to get to the bottom of how Wednesday’s sudden storm put so many in such a predicament, but he said snowplow operators also had trouble dealing with the conditions.

THE MAN looked cold as he stood on the side of the Cobequid Pass’s eastbound lanes with his thumb out, hoping to catch a ride.

“You heading to Truro?” he asked, smiling, just before 9 a.m. Thursday. His smile faded when the answer was negative.

'I had four Turtles and a PowerAde'



DAVE BEED was driving home to Cole Harbour after a business trip to Moncton on Wednesday evening when traffic came to a halt in the middle of the highway.

He was stuck sitting in the middle of a snowstorm 14 kilometres from the toll booth on the Cobequid Pass and had no idea how long he’d be there.

Cheap drunks crashing at QEII ER, doc says

Doctor blames downtown bars’ dollar drinks for high number of booze-induced emergency room visits


Partiers get cheap booze and bars make big profits. But the results of “dollar-a-drink” nights are often anything but fun and taxpayers are left with big bills for repairing the damage, says the head of emergency medicine for the Capital district health authority.

Dr. John Ross said he finds it inconceivable bars are allowed to push such cheap booze, particularly at young people who are more likely to take risks and to develop addictions.
